The history of electronic dance music dates back to the middle of the 19th century. The first instrument for the edm music mix was the etherphone invented by Leon. Now, synthesizers that were once only found in studios are available to everyone, even at home. Thanks to them, the creation and recording of EDM electronic music has become much easier, and it can be done both as a hobby and in a professional studio.
So you’ve decided to create dance music. What do you need first?
Synthesizer. It is he who creates real music: beats, rhythms and tones. By the way, today many electronic musical instruments, especially for home use, have a built-in synthesizer.
Keyboard controller. This is the most commonly used synthesizer controller. Keyboards can have from 2 to 7 octaves. Home keyboards usually have 4, 5 – 6 octaves. Many of them respond to touch, and the force of the blow on the keys determines the volume of the sound.
MIDI guitar. This is software that allows you to use an acoustic or electric guitar to control a synthesizer with a pickup. MIDI guitars work by converting string vibrations into digital data.
Electronic drum pads. They usually come in packages similar to acoustic cymbal drums. Early versions contained pre-recorded samples, while current versions calculate the sound mathematically. You can play electronic drums with headphones so that only the drummer hears the sound. Radio drums. Originally designed as a 3D mouse, Radio Drum detects the position of two sticks in 3D, with the sound changing based on their position on the surface.
Technical equipment for the production of electronic music
Although electronic musical instruments alone are enough to play electronic music, you will need a computer system to play them. Both laptops and computers are suitable for this. If you are going to produce in a fixed location, a computer is recommended. If you want to work in different places, like where your band is rehearsing, a laptop is probably the best choice.
Use the operating system you are most familiar with. However, it must be the latest version of Windows or MacOS. Your system’s CPU needs to provide enough power and enough storage space to be able to produce as easily as possible.
Sound card. Using a sound card designed for electronic music production is recommended if you plan to do a lot of recording outside the office. Boxes for studio monitors. Please note: these are not computer speakers, but studio recording boxes.
Studio headphones. Listening to music with headphones instead of speakers can help you focus on the individual components of your song and identify the rhythms and layers of the sound.
Don’t skimp on software either. You will need the following devices. Digital audio workstation (DAW). This is the actual production software on which all other components are based. With an audio editing program, you can work when it comes to mastering edm music.
Synthesizers/Instruments Virtual Studio Technology (VST). Many of these plugins are available online for free. However, they are necessary. For example, VST effects. provide musical effects such as echo, choral sounds, delay and others.
In principle, a computer keyboard as a “virtual piano keyboard” and a mouse are also suitable, but it would be more natural to connect a MIDI controller to the system.
